After a long delay, France began its underground nuclear tests again in 1995 on the Mururoa-Atoll in the Pacific. Many organizations, headed by the AISL, protested against the tests and urged the French president Chirac in an open letter to stop the tests immediately. Further protests were made to China, which also tested nuclear weapons at the same time. The Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) have fought since their foundation in 1980 in the spirit of Albert Schweitzer's " Reverence for life " for the prevention of a nuclear war.
