Albert Schweitzer’s text of 1906 and the afterword of 1927 that refers to it are finally united in one volume. The young Alsatian organist was on a familiar footing with the organ music of his time both in France and Germany, and his valuable observations fulfilled a genuine function as intermediary between the two traditions. Indeed, with the interest in late-romantic organ music on the rise, Schweitzer’s comments are, if anything, even more important to organists of today.
