For a time, he was the ‘most famous man in the world’, revered and admired by millions as a philosopher, theologian, musician, writer and doctor: Albert Schweitzer. Together with his wife Helene, he founded a jungle hospital in Central Africa that became world-renowned.
In 1923, the couple, together with their daughter Rhena, moved into a house in Königsfeld in the Black Forest – their family home and a base for Schweitzer’s later stays in Europe. Whilst her husband continued to expand the hospital in Africa and was showered with honours in the years that followed – culminating in the Nobel Peace Prize – Helene Schweitzer, who suffered from lung disease, led a secluded life on the outskirts of the small spa town.
