Emma’s Stewardship

A real pillar of support for the work of the “Great Doctor”

Eating well is as important for the body as it is for the morale, especially when you are far from home. In Lambaréné hospital, the nursing staff could count on Emma Haussknecht’s good menus.

A loyal collaborator of Schweitzer’s for 30 years (from 1925 to his death in 1956), she was not only responsible for the kitchen and the upkeep of the hospital, but also for the animals (chickens, goats…), the garden and the plantation. This efficient versatility made her a real pillar of support for the work of the “Great Doctor”.
