The mystery of Oganga

When Dr Schweitzer arrived in Lambaréné in 1913, the local people were unaware of the principle of narcosis for operations. They attributed to Dr. Schweitzer the great power to “kill” the sick in order to “resuscitate” them in better health during operations. This extraordinary ability contributed to his nickname Oganga, which means “great sorcerer” or “healing sorcerer”.
