Aunt Mathilde

An invaluable support

Mathilde Schweitzer continued to watch over her nephew’s career, discreetly present beside his desk in his house in Gunsbach.

Thanks to her, Albert Schweitzer was introduced to Parisian intellectual circles and put in touch with the famous organist Charles-Marie Widor, who gave him invaluable musical lessons.

Albert Schweitzer dedicated both editions of his famous book on Bach to Widor: ” In memory of Mrs Mathilde Schweitzer – A tribute of profound gratitude”.
